BMMsoft EDMT® Server FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions, Background Information

Facts About BMMsoft and EDMT® Server

Who is BMMsoft?

Based in San Francisco, CA, BMMsoft delivers software that enables business decision makers to quickly and cost-effectively discover, access and analyze all enterprise data, thereby giving them the complete picture needed to make fully informed decisions.

What is EDMT® Server?

BMMsoft EDMT® Server is a state-of-the-art solution for integrating, accessing and analyzing both unstructured (Emails, Documents, Multi-media) data and structured (Transactions) data from within a single SQL datastore.

What is EDMT®?

EDMT refers to Emails, Documents, Multi-media and Transactions. EDMT® Server allows you to store, manage, access and cross-analyze all data types from a single, standard SQL GUI.

What is the difference between EDMT® Server and a data warehouse?

Data warehouse technologies allow for the consolidation and store of structured (transactional) data only. While useful for doing traditional business intelligence queries against primarily financial data, structured data represents approximately 20% of the total data stored by an enterprise. The other 80% of enterprise data is unstructured data - emails, documents, videos, pictures, IM files, etc. - data that is typically stored in multiple, specifically purposed repositories. EDMT® Server enables the integration of all data types regardless of where the data is currently stored so that business users can quickly and easily access, interrogate and cross-analyze this unified data.

What is a Real-time analytic archive?

A Real-time analytic archive is a data repository that both stores the data and makes it immediately available for interrogation and analysis. Historically, to manage the costs of long term data storage, most of corporate data has been archived in "near-line" or "off-line" storage technologies such as tape. Unfortunately, while cost-effective, archiving data in these technologies renders the stored data essentially unavailable for everyday use. A Real-time analytic archive, uses advanced data compression algorithms and stores the data on very low cost disk technologies. As a result, data stored in an analytic archive is immediately available for use (search, discovery, and analysis) and can be archived at a cost comparable to that of tape.

What kind of experience does the BMMsoft team have?

The BMMsoft executive team is comprised of many high-tech veterans including key positions at Intel, Tandem, Sequent, DEC, and Sybase,. Our CTO and President, Paul Krneta, was the CTO for Sybase IQ prior to joining BMMsoft. BMMsoft's engineering team are specialists in data management and unstructured data analysis.

What are EDMT® Server's main components?

With a single software solution rather than a myriad of hardware and expensive customized programs, BMMsoft's EDMT® Server provides automated integration, management, discovery and analysis of all data types within a single SQL datastore.

  • The EDM APIs are pre-built links that enable the EDMT® Server to access unstructured data content and ingest this content into the EDMT® Server engine.

  • The EDMT® Ingest and Meta data Manager automates all of the unstructured data ingest processes and transforms this content to SQL-compatible structure by creating meta data tags as the data is ingested. Using parallelized ingest processes, EDMT® Ingest and Meta data Manager enables the ingest and transformation of unstructured data at speeds exceeding 1 terabyte per hour.

  • The EDMT(R) Policy Manager automates the processes for managing all policies governing data/records classification, retention, access privileges and alerts

  • EDMT(R) Information Access, Discovery and Analysis Services are a set of user interface methods and services for directly interrogating and analyzing the combined data managed by EDMT(R) Server. These services include an EDMT(R) Server Administrator GUI, an API for integrating standard SQL query tools, an API for integrating web services and an API for integrating custom data analysis tools.

On which operating systems and databases does EDMT(R) Server run?

EDMT(R) Server works with Solaris, AIX, HP UX and Linux operating systems. Sybase IQ is the reference database for EDMT(R) Server, however EDMT(R) Server supports any standard SQL database engine including Netezza, Oracle and MySQL.

What makes EDMT(R) Server different?

EDMT(R) Server's major technical differentiators include:

  • Designed to manage information of all types

  • Provides real-time alerting and notification of events referenced in any type of unstructured data

  • Very high speed (over 1 terabyte/hour) data ingest enabling real-time data capture, analysis, alerting and response

  • Automated mapping of structured data and unstructured content ("metadata on the fly")

  • Stores unified data in a single SQL database making unified search and analysis possible

  • Extreme data compression reduces cost by 90%

  • Energy efficient by design: Less resources = less energy = less CO2

How cost-effective is the EDMT® Server?

EDMT(R) Server costs approximately 1/10th the cost of alternative approaches to archiving, accesing and analyzing unstructured data. And, EDMT(R) Server reduces total energy consumption and CO2 emissions by as much as 90%!
